This Week’s Top Story

Children’s boutique Mint Mini (4949 N. Damen Ave., minthomemini.com) recently debuted on the North Side. A midcentury furniture shop specializing in handcrafted cribs and toddler beds as well as refurbished dressers, the Ravenswood storefront is an offshoot of North Center destination Mint Home.

For owners Keisha Bandealy and Jessie Kuhny, Mint Mini is a natural progression. “We found that about 50 to 60 percent of our customers were parents,” Bandealy says of Mint Home, which she and Kuhny opened in 2009. Inspired by clients using vintage dressers in place of traditional changing tables, Bandealy and Kuhny—moms themselves—set out to create a children’s store.

In addition to vintage dressers refurbished by Bandealy and Kuhny, the 1,100-square-foot shop notably stocks American-made sustainable cribs and toddler beds by Kalon Studios, which the duo likes because “they make our cribs and toddler beds in this modern, simplistic design approach that’s very California,” Bandealy says.

“The process of hand-picking the vendors to go into Mini has been like [caring for] a baby,” says Kuhny, adding that the concept’s aesthetic is “a bit more boho” than Mint Home. “It’s a whole different artistic side for us to be picking pieces that are a little lighter, that will work with the vibe that’s happening in Mini.”
