SAVE Macy’s sorely misjudged the Marshall Field’s handover and seems incapable of refreshing the flagship location, but the store is still the best place to shop for a new bathing suit; it offers the widest selection of styles starting in the affordable double digits. All the usual designer brands are here—Calvin Klein, Trina Turk, Ralph Lauren, Anne Cole, Michael Kors, DKNY; those with other body types will find a solid selection of the corseting Miraclesuit ($122) and one-piecers with skirted bottoms.

SPLURGE This ultra-high-end ltalian lingerie maker on Michigan Avenue also has a year-round line of swimwear that certainly would make a fine impressions if one were ever invited aboard a mogul’s yacht. But devotees of these luxurious beach pieces say they are as comfortable, durable, and good-fitting as they are beautiful near works-of-art. Skip the Las Vegas–showgirl styles—such as the teeny-tiny bikini with a mirror-sequined top (pictured; $558)—for more demure variations that wrap around the body in novel, sexy ways.
