The Winchester

1001 N. Winchester Ave.
Chicago, IL 60622

Critic’s Notes

Simplicity rules at this bright corner café, where a laid-back staff rolls out the welcome mat morning, noon, and night. Day breaks with espresso and warm grain cereal crowned with seasonal fruit, afternoon includes fennel-tinged smoked-trout sandwiches, and sipping Seasons fruit sodas; and nightfall means bowls of bucatini with fork-tender meatballs. How about a well-executed cocktail for a nightcap? A terrific go-to, no matter where you live.

Dishes We Liked

Warm grain cereal with seasonal fruit ($8); Brussels sprout salad with fennel, grana padano, dill, and chives ($9); chickpea wrap with yogurt, feta, kale, and pickled vegetables ($9); bucatini and meatballs with tomato and Parmesan ($18)
