Burgers & Brews: The Lucky Monk

By Jeff Ruby

Vows of silence and chastity don’t sound terribly fun—and don’t even get us started on hair shirts. But you can’t go wrong with fresh-ground prime burgers, hand-cut fries, New York–style pizzas, and Belgian-style beers brewed on-site. Opening just such a 240-seat brewery next to a massive movie theatre sounds like a sure thing, and that’s exactly what Jonathan Fox (La Madia) and Matt McMillin (Big Bowl) have done. “We wanted a modern expression of traditional monastery brewing in Belgium,” says Fox. “But we plan to honor the tradition—and serve food that really works well with beer.” 105 Hollywood Blvd., South Barrington; 847-898-0500.

This place is AMAZING!!! We've been there multiple times. I have a hard time trying to order anything other than the burgers; however, my husband had the free-range chicken which was so tender and juicy, it just fell off the bone. The burgers are so delicious and are available in a smaller 6 oz portion or a larger 9 oz portion. The Pretzel Trio is a MUST for an appetizer and the beer sampler is a great way to get a little taste of the different beer they offer. Great food, amazing service, wonderful beer...we've referred this place to many friends and family and continue to go back. If you're lucky enough to have Nick as your server, the experience is sure to be a fantastic one. Since it's right next to the AMC movie theater, we like to eat here before or after seeing a movie.
