James Chandler

Neurosurgeon
Northwestern Memorial Hospital

With more than 4,000 successful brain tumor operations under his belt, James Chandler is internationally renowned in the area of endoscopic skull base surgery—a minimally invasive method of operating on the brain that means faster recoveries. Now Chandler—codirector of the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute and surgical director of neuro- oncology at Northwestern Memorial—is pioneering the use of 3D glasses and a mini microscope to remove tumors through the nose with no visible scarring. “The margin for error is so slim in the brain and skull base,” he says. “The 3D system gives that new dimension.” When it comes to the brain, Chandler says, “we are in the embryonic phase of understanding.”
