How to Improve Your Bike-to-Work Experience

From Gin Kilgore, program director of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, and Annie Byrne, co-owner of BFF Bikes in Bucktown

1 Add grime-shedding fenders, such as those from Longboard ($43, amazon.com). Because who wants to arrive at the office with filthy pants?

2 Don’t wear a backpack. To avoid a sweaty shirt (and back strain), carry your stuff in a pannier clipped to your rear rack. Kilgore likes the Po Campo Loop Pannier ($114, BFF Bikes).

3 Consider a mug holder. Rejected a bike commute for fear of java withdrawal? Here goes your last excuse. The PDW Bar-ista ($22, ridepdw.com) attaches right to your handlebars.

4 Pick the right helmet. Byrne suggests the Giro Sutton ($80, giro.com): “It’s an urban-style look, but super-lightweight and well ventilated.”
