DISAPPEARS

Since forming in 2008, this drone-rock group has proved anything but a vanishing act: issuing two critically acclaimed albums (a third release, Pre Language, debuts March 1 on Kranky Records), snagging a coveted spot on Lollapalooza’s 2011 schedule, and opening for heavy hitters such as the Arctic Monkeys, Deerhunter, and the Fresh & Onlys. Featuring talent from the beloved Chicago indie-rock staples the Ponys and 90 Day Men, Disappears inducted its biggest name yet in late 2010. Since signing on as drummer, Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley has rocketed the band to national attention from what some might call thin air.
