CNN Goes Inside Cook County’s Trauma Unit

Via Gapers Block, CNN took a look inside Cook County's trauma unit. It's short, but there are good details—like the fact that their rise in patients has paralelled that of the city's homicide rate this year. And it emphasizes the sometimes fine line between a shooting and a homicide: while a stray bullet can be fatal, sometimes a person can be shot 13 times and live. One of the most interesting studies I've read takes a long look at this topic, an in-depth analysis of shootings in Newark that attempts to tease out why certain shootings become homicides.
