Keith Moreland Comes Off the Bench to Replace Ron Santo

WGN turns to reserve announcer and former Cubs stalwart Keith Moreland to fill the big, gruff shoes of Ron Santo.

Former Cubs outfielder/third-baseman and current utility announcer Keith Moreland just got moved up to the big leagues–he’s the pick to replace the beloved Ron Santo in the WGN broadcast booth. The good-hit/no-field Moreland was immortalized in Steve Goodman’s great “The Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request,” and there’s a bittersweet coda to that which endears him further to me after having watched a lot of Moreland on the field when I was a kid (via Bleed Cubbie Blue, which ranks Moreland #60 on the list of the greatest Cubs of all time).
