Vice TV Looks at CeaseFire During Chicago’s Violent Summer

On the heels of The Interrupters and Chicago's violent summer, Vice TV takes a look at CeaseFire, part of the city's long game on crime. The first episode focuses on Ameena Matthews, a CeaseFire interrupter, daughter of Jeff Fort, and as in the Kartemquin doc, an incredibly compelling presence (via Chicagoist).

Biggest waste of money. This will likely sound biased, but my brother-in-law is a police officer who routinely deals with Ceasefire and according to him, it's overflowing with current (not ex) gangbangers. They help obstruct the police and as the stats show, have no effect on the murder rate.
They're also routinely met with gangbangers who cry that they're with Ceasefire upon being placed under arrest. After the last incident where this happened, POs were told to refrain from arresting CF members until it could be confirmed. This most recently happened during the wilding incidents around the Gold Coast where whites were targeted and beaten.

CeaseFire cannot control who says that they're with CF. In all of its 10+ year history of The Interrupters and Outreach Workers, who've stopped thousands of shootings, there have been how many cases of confirmed gang involvement by CF members?... I'm tired of people who are most concerned about "whites" (when it's 99% black and brown people dying every day) keeping their eyes closed to other solutions besides increased police presence. Clearly that's not working or we wouldn't be where we are today. The City should give CeaseFire a real chance to work WITH police, with real (multi-million) funding. We need to come at this problem from all angles.
