WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND

Susan Messing

Susan Messing

Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Susan Messing, improv comedian. A special, Just for Laughs version of Messing with a Friend with Scott Adsit and Tim Meadows happens Wednesday, June 12 at 9:30.

“Thursday evening, I’m doing an interview for WTTW with Scott Adsit about comedy in Chicago. It’ll probably be about why Chicago is such an epicenter for comedy. Then I’ll teach the first of an 8-week improv session at the Annoyance Studio Space. At 10:30, I’m doing my weekly show Messing with a Friend. I call it a joyful, uncensored, and improvised romp through hell. It’s 45 minutes of longform improv. Jimmy Carrane is the guest star this week.

“Friday morning, I will go to HpI Gym, around the corner from where I live in North Center. It’s awesome, practically abandoned and it’s not expensive. Then I’m meeting up with a friend. We might have brunch at the Lincoln Lodge, which is somewhere between a dive and good food. I’ll probably have an omelet. If not Lincoln Lodge, then Danny’s Egghead Diner—it’s comfort food with a Mexican twist. Everything is covered with chorizo. Then I’ll teach at the School at the Steppenwolf. If I’m able to, I’d love to see Bobby Newhart. He’s the epitome of a gracious, sophisticated comedian. If that doesn’t work out, then I’ll go catch a documentary at the Music Box with my husband.

“Sunday, my daughter has a piano recital. I don’t usually reward children with sugar but we might go to Margie’s afterwards. It’s a classic, solid Chicago landmark. I also have a show with Rachael Mason called The Boys at de Maat Theatre. We do it the third Sunday of every month. Michael Gellman is our special guest. We describe the show as ‘unfettered dumb.’ ” —As told to Tomi Obaro
