Three New Restaurants and a Food Truck Hit Chicago This Week

The Doughnut Vault now has a wheeled companion, Thalia Hall welcomes a beer-centric bar, and The Grid heads upstairs.

Openings

• Friday, 9/20: The Doughnut Vault (401½ N. Franklin St.) hit the road last week with its new food truck, the Vault Van. You can follow its whereabouts via Twitter for frequent updates on how much of its precious cargo is still left. Word is that these pastries go fast, so keep a keen eye on your social media feed if you want a fry cake with your coffee.

• Wednesday, 9/25: Fresh fish straight from Hawaii and 10 types of dim sum are a few of the items you’ll find at Runa (2257 W. North Ave., 773-278-8887). Owner Henry Zhang hopes to stand out among the sushi restaurants in Bucktown with his Japanese fare at this new BYOB.

• Friday, 9/27: Originally, a lounge below Baume & Brix, The Grid (351 W. Hubbard St., 312-321-1351) expands into food service and the upstairs space now that the former restaurant is closed. Read about potential menu items in our coverage from earlier this week here.

• Saturday, 7/28: The two food and drink businesses included in Thalia Hall’s renovation open their doors this weekend. Dusek’s Board & Beer (1227 W. 18th St., 773-276-3600) serves a menu by Longman & Eagle’s Jared Wentworth to go with its beer menu from cicerone Will Duncan. Downstairs, Punch House provides refreshment with a full bar and a variety of alcoholic punches sold by the glass, carafe, bowl, and even in refillable growlers.

Morsels

Between Bites is a new night of food and storytelling. It is held at different restaurants, with the proceeds going to charities chosen by the host. This week’s inaugural meeting was at Two (1132 W. Grand Ave., 312-624-8363) and cost $20, proceeds went to Un86’d. Six different food writers from throughout the city shared their stories over heavy appetizers and wine. For those of you watching the Bears in the comforts of your living room, The Florentine (151 W. Adams St., 312-660-8866) now offers a Take Home Tailgate special. The basket is packed for two people and includes a meatball sandwich, homemade chips, meats and cheeses, pasta salad, and cookies. Cost is $45 and orders must be placed 30 minutes before the requested pick up time.

Bub City (435 N. Clark St., 312-610-4200) welcomes your budding romance with its Cheap Date Wednesdays. You can indulge in a dinner for two for $29.95 from 4 p.m. to close; the set menu includes cheese and crackers, a full rack of ribs, three sides, and a root beer float that conveniently comes with two straws.

Tavern on Rush (1031 N. Rush St., 312-664-9600) now has a Ladies Night every Monday. Women receive a complimentary raffle ticket (hospitality industry workers receive two) for a chance to win prizes such as a $250 gift card to the restaurant or a free pair of Christian Louboutin Shoes (both men and women can buy tickets to the raffle). $7 appetizers, $5 desserts, and drink specials are also available.
