“Fashion should be eye candy, right down to a simple T-shirt and sweater. Even these things can have the most beautiful cut and be luxurious.”
Since opening Ikram six years ago, Goldman has raised the city’s fashion profile unlike any other retailer since her mentor, Joan Weinstein. Practically every issue of Vogue, W, and Harper’s Bazaar mentions the shop, and designers as diverse as Proenza Schouler, John Truex, and Viktor & Rolf regularly make tracks to Chicago to support and applaud Goldman’s efforts.
IN THE BEGINNING “I went to a private Catholic school [while growing up] in Israel and wore a navy pleated skirt or
a jumper, a white button-down shirt or a turtleneck, and patent leather shoes. I still love that look today.”
TAKE A BREAK FROM CASUAL FRIDAYS “I’m not asking for a suit and a tie, but no jeans for work, please. And never wear a pair of jeans to an evening event, even if they cost $3,000. This is not up for discussion.”
NEVER COMPROMISE ON YOUR BAG AND SHOES “Women will spend money on the most incredible thing, then say, ‘I have shoes at home.’ Come on, you’ve spent money on a beautiful dress, so splurge a little more for the bag and shoes. They are the things people notice.”
WHAT GETS HER HEART POUNDING “Hussein Chalayan’s spring 2007 show. When my throat chokes up and tears come to my eyes, I know I’m witnessing something extraordinary. I have seen this designer move from brilliance and intellectual fashion to a brilliant show of fashion and a lightening of spirit.”
FASHION SHOULD BE “Eye candy, right down to a simple T-shirt and sweater. Even these things can have the most beautiful cut and be luxurious. It’s OK to splurge on beautiful things.”
FASHION GREATS “The classic great: Yohji Yamamoto. Newer greats: Alexander McQueen, Thakoon—and Rodarte, time and time again. My favorite Rodarte from this season is an organza drop-waist white dress with full hips and black-and-white appliqués dribbling down the front. We are the only ones in the world who bought this piece.”
SPRING MUST-HAVES “Azzedine Alaïa open-toe lace-up leather boots—they’re just about the sexiest things ever. And people will love the washable silk Lanvin jump suit and the Devi Kroell big, circular python day bag. Shoes are so much fun, too—play with a wedge flat in purple, red, green, gold, or platinum.”CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT “My Isabel Toledo pieces. There has never been a time when I have put on her pieces, vintage or new, and not felt great. And I adore my Chrome Hearts bag.”
