There’s a small-town-café charm about this Pilsen sandwich shop that makes you want to be a regular right away: the fireplace mantel piled high with old eight-track tapes, the vintage couch that could have been a Mom donation, the way the staff greets each customer with easygoing chitchat. Oh, and those from-scratch sandwiches that taste like they were made with love.
All eight or so kinds come on soft housemade white or whole-grain bread. Word to the wise: The braised goat sandwich with stewed tomatoes and poblano cream ($8) sells out fast; taste it and you’ll know why. But you can’t go wrong with the garlicky hummus with tapenade, pickled peppers, and spicy arugula ($6) or the ham with housemade pickle spears and smoked cheddar ($7).
You’ll also want to fork over the extra $2 for the crisp, salty house-fried chips. Happily, they are always in abundant supply.
