Torres, also known as Mackenzie Scott, plays the Empty Bottle June 27.

In January, Torres (22-year-old singer-songwriter Mackenzie Scott) crawled out of nowhere to become one of this year’s most treasured new artists.

Her fast track to critical success should come as no surprise, though—quick turnarounds are her M.O. After receiving an electric guitar just last Christmas (a family-pooled gift), the singer got to work, translating her former acoustic tracks to a more gritty realism and finding a producer in her town of Nashville to collect them in one package. They worked together for just five days to produce her stunning live-to-tape debut, Torres, which is as lo-fi as it is demanding of its listener.

With the poignant songwriting chops of Brandi Carlisle, the ghastly instrumental atmosphere of Chelsea Wolfe and a voice that scales from ‘90s rock howl to a soft indie whisper, Scott is the poster child for modern minimalist rock. Given more time and production tools we can only imagine what Scott comes up with next — not that we want her to change the formula.

Torres plays June 27 at 9 p.m. $10. Empty Bottle, 1035 N Western Ave. emptybottle.com. Hear her song “Honey” here.
