Dmitry Samarov, artist, (former) cabdriver, and author of the book Hack: Stories From a Chicago Cab (based off the blog of the same name) has long been one of my favorite Chicago writers, capturing a sometimes deadpan, sometimes bleak portrait of the city from the driver's seat of a taxi. That it's captured in motion presents an entirely different view of Chicago as a social organism. So it's nice to see him team up with John McNaughton, whose Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is not just one of the better Chicago and cult movies ever made—it's gruesome and difficult to watch, but beautifully made and acted—captures the city streets of 25 years ago in similar motion. (It's a favorite of Patton Oswalt.)
