Paging through the latest Design Within Reach catalog (shown above) and admiring the new patio pieces they’re carrying, I still can’t get out of my mind something that Tara Heibel, owner of of Sprout Home, said when I interviewed her last spring about outdoor design. She believes that people should shake things up more outside: mix vintage with new, traditional with modern—just like they would indoors. In their catalogs, companies like West Elm and DWR tend to show inviting, layered interiors, featuring their products alongside antiques and even flea market finds. So why are their outdoor schemes still boring suites of matching furniture? Outdoor living is not a new concept anymore—let’s see some more energy in the way it’s presented.
