If you thought art glass was limited to hand-blown vessels or figures, there’s an exhibit taking place right now in River North that will shatter your expectations (in a good way).

Over the next few months, Vale Craft Gallery (230 W. Superior St.), which specializes in American craft and sculpture, is showing the works of four glass artists: Richard Parrish, Steve Immerman, Melissa Haid, and local artist Paul Messink, whose work is shown here.

What’s unique about this show is that it’s all centered around kiln-formed glass, which involves cutting and fitting together sheets of glass, then firing them in a kiln until they fuse together. In the case of Messink’s work, each sheet is handpainted first, and the result is at the same time striking and muted—almost as if you are looking through a window at his scenes.

The show include panels, bowls, and trays, and all of the items are for sale. Open Tuesdays through Saturdays through November 3.
