Tomorrow through Sunday, Antiques + Modernism Winnetka (thewinnetkashow.com) returns to the Winnetka Community House (620 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka, winnetkacommunityhouse.org). Kicking off the A+M Show festivities is renowned designer Alexa Hampton (alexahampton.com), who will be in attendance for tonight’s preview event as well as a breakfast presentation tomorrow, where she will be signing copies of her book Decorating in Detail and, afterward, shopping the show.
“I try to go with an open mind, and then I do a few passes because you can’t possibly see everything in one shot,” Hampton says of her shopping strategy. “You’re looking up, and then you need to go back through and look down when confronted with all those treasures.”
This marks Hampton’s inaugural visit to the A+M Show. The New Yorker has an aunt in Winnetka who she visits often and considers the northern suburb “my second outpost.” Hampton has fond memories of frequenting the Village Green (525 Maple St., Winnetka) and often finds herself at Onwentsia Club (300 N. Green Bay Rd., Lake Forest, onwentsiaclub.org) and Indian Hill Club (1 Indian Hill Rd., Winnetka, indianhillclub.org) when visiting the North Shore. “Certainly places like Winnetka and Lake Forest are so architecturally superior because the people of the area have made sure that it’s stayed beautiful and don’t build crazy things,” she says. “There’s real pride in preserving it.”
