Since moving to Chicago from Indianapolis two years ago, the partners have landed a devoted group of clients who like their fresh, colorful take on classic design and their designer-as-therapist approach. "We really talk to people about what inspires them and what holds them back," says Richardson. "Did their mom do things a certain way and they feel they should, too?" The partners also have a licensing agreement to launch a line of updated classic furniture that’s scaled to fit smaller spaces. "For smaller condo dwellers, there’s West Elm, Ikea, and little else; we’re filling that gap," says Raney. Richardson adds: "A small space doesn’t necessarily mean an inexpensive place. People who have a 1,200-square-foot condo overlooking Lake Michigan want their home to look amazing." 312-640-9529; civilitydesign.com
