After 15 years of custom-designing furniture for his clients, Chicago interior designer Michael Richman had created a bona fide furniture line, if only in his portfolio. Now he’s taking his designs (which he describes as having “a mid-century provenance, but updated”) to the next level: manufacturing a small, eponymous collection and selling it through yet-to-be-determined galleries and his firm’s Web site. “I plan on taking an artistic approach and doing some of the pieces in editions,” he says. “There’s such a definitive look to the furniture at the Mart; a custom piece feels so much more special.” Expect upholstered furniture, consoles and tables, and interesting applications of Lucite, which, he says, you won’t find much of at the Mart. Shown here: a wood credenza with a lacquered surround, Lucite base, and stainless-steel-framed drawer fronts with woven raffia insets.
