The ancestral home of Daleys Richard J. and Richard M., Bridgeport has benefited from Chinatown’s boom. There’s a fierce sense of multigenerational community on these blocks, which are dominated by modest single-family homes, with a smattering of three-flats and small apartment buildings. House prices—down 34 percent since the 2006 peak—are beginning to revive: They rose 16 percent from 2012 to 2013. And the 20-something creative crowd is starting to move in, generally a good sign for future property values.

If you have young kids, move to the east side of the neighborhood for its good elementary schools. Unfortunately, Tilden High, which serves Bridgeport, is not stellar. That’s a problem that many residents sidestep by opting for one of the solid Catholic high schools in the area, such as De La Salle Institute or St. Ignatius College Prep, the city’s first Jesuit school.
