UPTOWN
LIST
$4.995 MILLION

John and Karen Baca bought this Hutchinson Street house in 1989, were married in its living room, and spent years restoring the place. With some of their four children grown, the couple listed the house in early 2011 at $5.19 million. In October, Jennifer Ames of Coldwell Banker took over the listing and reset the price at $4.995 million.

Designed by the architect George W. Maher, the 15-room house was built in 1913 for Claude Seymour, a jeweler, who died just a year after moving in. While the home’s exterior, with its deep overhanging roof and horizontal lines, remained intact, a subsequent owner ripped out a paneled library to create an overlook to a hot tub in the basement. The Bacas restored the library and updated the kitchen, the bathrooms, and all the mechanical systems; for a time during the rehab, they lived in the former servants’ quarters on the third floor.

Today, the interior is a remarkable composition of arched ceilings, mahogany trim, and leaded windows. “We’re living immersed in an Arts and Crafts environment,” Karen Baca says.
