An Ebony Fashion Fair dress

History Lesson

Though some designers shunned her, Eunice Johnson was one of the first black women to buy couture. In 1963, the wife of Ebony’s founder joined the Ebony Fashion Fair, bringing high fashion to African Americans around the country. From March 16 to January 5, the Chicago History Museum displays 68 garments from the fair’s archives. 1601 N. Clark St., 312-642-4600, chicagohistory.org/inspiringbeauty.
