Beef pies from Pleasant House Bakery

Brits have noshed on them for eons, but savory pies have yet to hit their stride stateside. Art Jackson, a dual citizen of the United States and England, whose cooking was inspired by his European grandmother, is poised to win over Chicago with Pleasant House Bakery, his counter- and full-service spot in Bridgeport. Jackson, the former Bijan’s Bistro chef, and his wife, Chelsea, plan to open with a homey menu of pies and pasties—such as a pie made with Goose Island beer, local beef, and sliced carrots in a flaky, herb-flecked crust—and salads and sides touting mustard, tatsoi, and bok choy from the Jacksons’ urban farm. Diners at the BYO bakery can carry in suds from Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar next door or take their food to Maria’s. “Our food and their beers go really well together,” says Art. “This is a great concept to do something simple, and there’s an opportunity to do a lot of other things around it.” Blimey, it’s about time. 964 W. 31st St.
