Local documentary film gurus Kartemquin brought together 275 filmmakers and benefactors at their 2018 #EmpoweringTruth luncheon. Sponsored by Chicago, the event featured a dynamic conversation about equity in education with filmmaker Steve James, Oak Park and River Forest High School teacher Jessica Stovall, and Charles Donalson III — pegged to James's docu-series America to Me, which examined racial inequality at OPRF. The moderator? Chicago's own Ali Barthwell, who reviewed the series this fall. Bing Liu, director of Kartemquin's Minding the Gap, also spoke.
