Protesters at the Haymarket Memorial today.

Expect more congestion than usual this afternoon around the Gold Coast/Michigan Avenue area: About 1,000 people are expected to protest the evils of capitalism.

Radicals Against Discrimination (RAD) is helming the rally, which started at 10 a.m. today at Cityfront Plaza. They’ve made pit stops at Fifth Third Bank (where they chanted, “You don’t need your boss, your boss needs you!” according to their Twitter account and at the Haymarket Memorial, where they read aloud the story of the 1886 riot.

Police have made a few arrests, but by and large, the protest appears to be peaceful. Mayday traditionally has a lot of labor-related protests. Last year, Occupy Chicago led a 2000-strong rally near Union Park.
