WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND
Janel Laban
Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Janel Laban, the executive editor of the popular design blog Apartment Therapy.
“On Thursday there is a don't-miss annual auction at Wright. I’ll head there because it's always a rare and wonderful treat to see pieces from some of my favorite 20th century designers, like Greta Grossman, Tommi Parzinger and Gio Ponti, in person.
“Friday afternoon, I’ll check out the Bouroullec Brothers show (again) at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Everything in the show looks fresh and on point for 2013 and beyond, even the pieces from a decade ago. Later that night, I’ll head to Yusho for dinner. They have great vintage furniture in the dining room and project old-school Godzilla movies on the brick wall in the back room. And I love the grilled oysters and pumpkin tempura.
“Saturday, I’ll do some holiday shopping at Unison. The designers behind the brand and shop are a super-talented couple with a great eye for design. I’ll probably try and run over to the French Market and grab a sandwich from Saigon Sisters. The “Porky” is the perfect mix of sweet and spicy tastes on a light-as-air rice flour baguette and it goes perfectly with an Asian Pear flavored kombucha. The French Market is great because I can also pick up some veggies, cheese and wine for dinner. After lunch espresso pick-me-up from Lavazza.
“Sunday, I’m going to see a matinee of Pillow Talk at the Siskel Center. The 1959 film has Doris Day, Rock Hudson and great ‘50s fashion and the most outrageous “bachelor pad” interior design. I've never seen it on the big screen, so it's about time!” —As told to Elly Fishman
