WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND
Photo: Courtesy of Jonathan Berry
Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Jonathan Berry, associate artistic director of the Griffin Theatre, artistic associate with Steep Theatre and director of The Casuals. The Casuals opens Thursday, July 11 at 7:30.
“Thursday is [the opening night of The Casuals]. I never actually watch the play on opening, mostly because I know my nervous energy is not helpful to the cast. So I’ll probably go to Miller’s Pub and grab a burger and a beer. Afterwards, I’ll meet the cast for the afterparty.
“I teach at the School at Steppenwolf on Fridays but Friday night I have a really good friend who’s leaving, so we’ll get drinks at Scofflaw. I’m not a really big mixed cocktail person but I like how [Scofflaw] is so casual.
“Saturday morning, I’ll go to the Green Flea Market on Saturday morning. It’s such a great atmosphere and the produce is fresh.
“Sunday, if I wake up early enough, I’ll go to brunch at the Publican. And then I’m going out to see Mine at The Gift Theatre on Sunday afternoon. There are only 25 seats in the entire place so it’s a more intimate place to see a play. I really love the quality of the work that they bring.” —As told to Tomi Obaro
