WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND

Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Tim Sniffen, writer and performer at Second City. The Second City Guide to Opera runs Friday May 31 through June 30.
“Thursday evening, we will be rehearsing The Second City Guide to the Opera, which we’ll preview on Friday night. It’s been fun bringing the adolescent, improv world to the [Lyric Opera], this stately, time-honored institution. Second City began with University of Chicago students taking on the higher brow and this show is a return to that.
“After rehearsal, there’s a place near the Lyric that I love going to for snacks and cocktails called Embeya. They’ve been so gracious to us. One time we arrived when they were trying to close and they made us a bunch of appetizers and drinks. They also helped me come around to brussel sprouts.
“I’m a baked goods freak, so Saturday morning I’ll go to this café called Bake. They have this chocolate pretzel cookie that’s almost the size of a pancake. We’re rehearsing the show until 7:30 p.m., so after the show, we’ll probably go to J. Parker, the rooftop bar at Hotel Lincoln. The view of the lake is gorgeous; it’s a view I didn’t know you could get from that area of the city.
“On Sunday morning I’ll head to Star Lounge Coffee Bar. I’ve been going there a ton. It’s magical—I went there while I was writing the show and I definitely believe that the right café can make you write better. It’s never too crowded and they play the right music. They also have a muffin with a hardboiled egg in it.
“Later that day—if I have time—I’ll go see the new Neo-Futurists play The Miss Neo Pageant. After the show, the theater will be putting on something for the cast and crew at the Old Town Social. They have these great charcuterie platters. It’ll be a good way to unwind.” —As told to Tomi Obaro
