WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND
Photo: Courtesy of Joyce Owens
Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Joyce Owens, artist and associate professor of drawing at Chicago State University. She curates Cesar Conde: Figures and Faces which opens on Thursday, September 12.
“Thursday is the opening of the Cesar Conde exhibition. He’s an artist whose work that I’ve followed for a while. He’s an incredible draftsman, and I want my students to see somebody who does portraits beautifully.
“Friday, there’s an exhibition at the South Side Community Art Center called From Maleness to Manhood; it’s about the issues of troubled males everywhere. A lot of stuff sprang up from the Trayvon Martin case. It includes 45 male artists—everyone from Dawoud Bey to some more emerging artists. It’s brave.
“I was influenced by the AFRICOBRA movement , and I’m in the show at DuSable. There’s another artist, Charly Palmer, whose work is dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington upstairs. I want to see that.
“Saturday, I wanted to go to the DePaul Art Museum. It’s a new, beautiful museum. I’ll stop by Sal’s Deli, they have Philadelphia style sandwiches, which I like because I’m from Philly.
“One of my neighbors is photographer Chuck Shotwell. I missed his opening so I’ll have to check out his exhibition on Sunday.” —As told to Tomi Obaro
