From there back—and from there up—the developer Jody Libman and his company, Trianon, have crafted an entirely new, though historically sensitive home. “You can’t build something that looks like this anymore,” Libman says. “Look how it fits into the row of graystones on this block. I didn’t want to break that up.”
The first thing I noticed when I walked into the residence was the staircase, which was twice as wide as the norm. That set the tone for the grand but not grandiose 5,600-square-foot interior. As you will see in the video, Libman, a fan of older architecture, filled that new interior with antique-look finishes, such as the paneled wainscoting and layered wood trim. But at the same time, he opened up the floor plan to accommodate a modern lifestyle, combining the living and dining areas in one large space, and, behind them, combining an open kitchen with a breakfast and family room. Brown-on-brown cabinetry—its walnut door panels cut from the same tree for a matching grain pattern—brings that whole rear space together. “There’s not an inch of this house that didn’t take a lot of thought,” Libman says.
The second-floor master bedroom features a fireplace and a bay of windows, and the master bath pairs a marble-decked tub with a transparent glass shower box. The large entertainment room in the basement echoes the paneled look from the main level. A three-car garage with a storage loft and a rooftop deck sits out back.
On top of the house itself, Trianon added a mansard roof above a new third floor. It contains a bedroom and a family room/kitchenette combo that opens onto a rooftop terrace (not yet complete when I shot the video) with a view east toward Wrigley Field.
Price Points: Libman initially priced the home at $2.65 million, but he has since dropped it to $2.495 million.
