The Property: This stone and stucco house in Hinsdale unfolds like a catalog of exquisite details. The bird-beak roof points and stone-arched entries are complemented inside by a stone fireplace in the foyer, a wood-beamed and –paneled ceiling soaring 24 feet above the family room, and a hanging oval staircase that winds among the house’s four levels like a hand-carved ribbon of walnut.

The slate-roofed house is the design of the architect Charles Vincent George and the builder Jim McMahon, who have collaborated on other super-lavish homes in Hinsdale. This one, McMahon says, “is definitely the best we’ve done.” The house’s Country French character is pervasive, extending even to the outdoor fireplace, a monumental stone and stucco contrivance capped by a copper roof.

It is a lavish—there are five chandeliers in the master suite dressing room alone—but comfortable home: none of the handsomely turned-out rooms is ostentatiously large. An oversize handmade armoire conceals two Sub-Zero refrigerators in the kitchen, distressed-cherry paneling and a window seat adorn the library, and textured stucco walls and a 12-foot beamed ceiling set off the master suite. “These are the things you get for $5.2 million,” says McMahon.

Price Points: This is the highest-priced speculative home ever sold in Hinsdale, according to records of the Multiple Listing Service of Northern Illinois, and it comes on the heels of McMahon’s $4.8-million sale featured in the Deal Estate column in Chicago’s February issue. This $5.2-million sale tops McMahon’s (and Hinsdale’s) previous benchmark for a spec house, the $5.038-million sale McMahon made in September 2006. McMahon has managed to do well in a down market, but he acknowledges that his past few houses might have sold for significantly more under better economic conditions. With those houses sold, he’s not starting anything new. “We’re in a holding pattern,” McMahon says.
