The Property: The wood, stone, and copper that detail the peaked façade of this newly built Hinsdale house hint at the level of attention that went into the 18-room interior. “The wood trim in here is measured in miles,” says Bryan Bomba, the Coldwell Banker agent representing the house for its builder, Montreux Custom Homes. He points out that the home’s crown molding, library paneling, wainscoting, and other trim is made of poplar (instead of the more standard pine) because its lower moisture content guards against visible separation in joints as it ages. “It’s not finished with brushes,” he adds. “It’s all been sprayed for a finish like a car [has].” That same care also went into the curves of the wrought-iron stair and balcony handrails, the inset oval ceiling of the dining room, and the ornate pub-style wooden bar in the basement.

More relaxed formal spaces lie beyond the formal front rooms, including an open kitchen that flows into a family room with a huge stone fireplace. “It doesn’t feel like a mausoleum,” Bomba says, though the family room does have a detailed beam pattern in the ceiling that might seem overwhelming to homeowners who think of the family room as a place to flop on the couch.

On the second floor, the master suite has a chandelier and a grotto-like walk-in shower and tub in its bathroom. There are three other bedrooms and three baths on this floor; one flight up is another bedroom and a playroom that could be configured as an in-law apartment. Along with the bar, a billiards room, and a media room, the big basement has two more bedrooms. (With a first-floor bedroom, the total comes to eight.)

Some details—as Bomba calls them, “buyer’s choice”— have been left unfinished, including the kitchen appliances and sink and the fencing for the rear yard. The latter was left undone because a buyer might want to add up to two more garage or outdoor parking spaces behind the house, which already has a three-car garage.

Price Points: The builders originally had the house listed at more than $3 million; when Bomba got the listing about a year ago, he cut the price to $2,899,900, and later to its present price. Two nearby houses have sold in the same price range—at $2.4 million and $2.75 million—within the past year, Bomba says; another similarly sized home about two blocks away sold in September for $2 million, according to the DuPage County Recorder of Deeds.
