The Property: Deanna Dunagan, who won a best actress Tony Award for her performance as a matriarch addicted to painkillers in August: Osage County, has bought a vintage condo overlooking Lincoln Park.

Dunagan’s purchase of a 2,400-square-foot condo on the 16th floor of a 1920s building on Lincoln Park West closed in mid-July, a year after she garnered one of August’s five Tony awards (out of seven nominations). Dunagan originated the role of Violet Weston when the play debuted at Steppenwolf here in 2007, and she traveled with the production to New York later that year. After winning the Tony, she left the play; the Broadway production closed June 28, 2009.

In her Tony acceptance speech, Dunagan noted that she had been in regional theatre for more than three decades and never expected to be on Broadway. Since moving to Chicago in 1981, the Texas-born actress has performed with several companies here, including Steppenwolf, the Goodman, Northlight, and Victory Gardens. The role in August was not the 69-year-old actress’s first on Broadway; in 1979, she appeared there in a production of Shaw’s Man and Superman.

Dunagan now lives in a 19-story brick building with ornate limestone decorations framing the entrance. There are only two condos per floor, and an elevator opens directly into each unit. According to the listing information, her condo has a 40-foot gallery with a coved ceiling and plaster detailing and other vintage touches. It also has the requisite updates: a recently renovated kitchen, as well as zoned climate control and new windows, which both improve energy efficiency.

Dunagan closed on the sale July 13th, but the details of the transaction only recently appeared in public records. She declined to comment on the purchase. Earlier this year, Tracy Letts, the playwright who won a Tony and a Pulitzer Prize for August, spent $3 million for a more contemporary Bucktown home.

Price Points: Linda Willford and Robert Wooster, who sold Dunagan her condo, had paid $750,000 for the place in April 2005, before renovating it. There is currently a 3,300-square-foot condo on the building’s fifth floor that’s for sale at $1,050,000.
