The Property: After Anne and Jan Maitland bought this Queen Anne house in 2003, they set about restoring the interior. The foyer, living room, and stairs still retained much of their original detail—nice stained glass, pretty fretwork on the door, and intricate wooden lace on the staircase—so they kept that. But the rest of the home, Anne Maitland says, “had been lived in hard.”

That may have been a blessing. “We got lucky,” Maitland says, “because we didn’t have to preserve a lot of little rooms that didn’t work.” Working with the architect Kathryn Quinn, the Maitlands created entirely new dining and kitchen spaces on the rear of the first floor and three comfortably sized bedrooms on the second. The Maitlands listed the house for sale in July because they want to move closer to their young son’s school near Loyola University, Anne Maitland said.

The house is the southern half of a pair of twins. Its southern exposure faces a neighbor’s driveway, a Lincoln Park rarity that, during the day, allows lots of light into the contemporary dining room. Alternating wood and glass panels enclose that space; as you will see in the video, the same cherry-finish wood extends into the kitchen and the master bedroom and bath, unifying the new parts of the house. A few vintage details remain upstairs, including two interior transoms that help control airflow.

The master bedroom suite gets the best of the home’s two eras: a big bay of windows overlooking the street, and a new bathroom with double vanities, a glass-enclosed shower, and other modern finishes. In the third bedroom, at the back of the house, large windows look out over a leafy yard with a patio.

Price Points: The house has no garage, and snaring on-street parking can be a problem. The Maitlands are renting a garage space across the street for $250 a month, an option that would presumably be available to any new owners.
