Jake Broullard, the lead makeup stylist for NARS Cosmetics, has this message for locals enduring the chilly, soggy summer: “Remember to put on your sunscreen. Just because it’s cloudy doesn’t mean you’re protected from the sun.”

Tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the beauty pro will offer more skincare tips—as well as product recommendations, makeup applications, and summer color demonstrations—at Bloomingdale’s on Michigan Avenue (900 N. Michigan Ave., bloomingdales.com). Prior to his arrival, Broullard offered up a crash course in summer beauty.

What’s a skincare regime that really works? And, how often do you recommend getting facials?

Use cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers to help get your skin in shape.

I’ve done makeup on celebrities and models with the most beautiful skin. I always ask what their secret is, and it’s always the same response: ‘I have a full skin care regime I use every day and night.’ I think facials are particularly great for times when you’re extremely stressed. They’re a great treat for your spirit as well as your skin.

Now that it’s (technically) summer, how should people revamp their makeup bags?

Trade in your [winter] bronzer for a darker shade to add a touch of warmth to your face. We retain color on our body more than on our face so it is essential to make the [skin tones] appear to match. I recommend Casino Bronzing Powder for almost every skin tone in the summer. Also, swap your deep lips for bright hues, and swap your black or brown liner for a more colorful alternative like a blue or purple.

Can you recommend some products for outdoor events? The Lincoln Park Zoo Ball is this week, and there’s also Lollapalooza and other outdoor events coming up.

When it comes to Chicago summer events like galas and Lollapalooza, it’s all about long-wearing makeup. Long-wear liquid foundations paired with primer and setting powder will give a weather-resistant wear. Make sure to pack a touchup powder in your purse to blot any excess shine. Long-wearing lipsticks are also essential—make sure to use a lip liner to add a clean look to the lips.

Want personalized recommendations? Broullard is still taking appointments for Saturday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Call 312-440-4869 to reserve.
