When Dillon took over the Bolingbrook-based Ulta in 2013, its outlets were concentrated largely in drab strip malls and growth was flat. Two years later, Ulta had overtaken Sephora as the country’s largest beauty retailer, adding hundreds of new stores, including a flashy flagship in Manhattan. Last year, with Ulta’s saturation of the domestic market mostly complete — the company has more than 1,200 stores, nine of them in Chicago — Dillon announced that she’s taking the chain international. That expansion is on hold until 2021 as the company waits out the coronavirus crisis. In April, Ulta also initiated “significant” furloughs, but the recent wooing of Kim Kardashian West, who began selling her line KKW Beauty at Ulta stores last summer, should help the retailer bounce back once outlets reopen.
