Chicago Gang Territory vs 2011 Chicago Homicides

A look at the overlap of Chicago gang-controlled areas of the city and how that compares with the distribution of homicides in 2011.

As part of David Bernstein and Noah Isackson’s excellent piece on politicians and gangs in Chicago, we included a map of Chicago gang territory based on CPD information. Out of curiosity, I plotted 2011’s homicides (through 12/11) and overlaid them on the gang-territory map. It’s approximate, but it’s a useful rough sketch of the overlap.

Update: @SethLavin makes the point that the above map correlates with CPS probation schools. It’s true:

great stuff, whet - now we just need the schools map to be done as an overlay so that people can see which schools are in which gang territory -- you'd be surprised but such a thing has never been done before.

I'm going to hazard a guess that another layer of average income or real estate value would be interesting.
