Act super-fast—today’s the day for the second annual Paella Cookoff at Mercat a la Planxa, where six chefs (including Ashlee Aubin of Salero and Perry Hendrix of Avec and Blackbird) will face off with their takes on the iconic Spanish dish, with one to be crowned the night’s paella champ. The catch? The $75 tickets are only available until noon.

See what the buzz is about at the local premiere of A Film About Coffee, a documentary that follows the coffee craze from bean to cup, hosted by Everybody’s Coffee and the Wilson Abbey Theater (935 W. Wilson Ave., Uptown, 773-303-6220. The film’s Chicago debut will be accompanied by tastings from local roasters, including Metropolis, Bow Truss, and Counter Culture. Gather round the (imaginary) campfire at Katherine Anne Confections (2745 W. Armitage Ave., Logan Square, 773-245-1630), where they’ll be showing off their latest collection of truffles and marshmallows, all inspired by the flavors of summer camp (think Fig Newtons, s’mores, and ants on a log.) The $30 tasting (tickets here) starts at 5:30 and includes drinks and other eats in addition to your sugary overload.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, so if your heart’s been growing unbearably in the absence of Hot Doug’s, there’s respite on the horizon at this weekend’s Dog Dayz of Summer festival at the Goose Island Barrel Warehouse (605 N. Sacramento, East Garfield Park). Your $75 admission (two time slots each on Saturday and Sunday) grants you unlimited tastings of 11 sausages plus five beer tickets (one of which you can use for a special offering such as Bourbon County Stout.) Watch art happen at a backyard party at Ada St. (1664 N. Ada St., Clybourn Corridor, 773-697-7069). They’re updating the mural on the restaurant’s walled-in outdoor patio with help from artist Anthony Venturini, and you can observe him at work while chugging cups of Metropolitan’s Heliostat Lager and eating chef Zoe Schor’s versions of BBQ classics like brats and potato salad. The party, which starts at 4 p.m., costs $25, and proceeds go to nonprofit Ada for the Arts—buy tickets here.
