Why Connor Murphy Loves Winter

Embracing the cold comes naturally to the defenseman. “There’s meant to be seasons,” he says. “You’re meant to put your coat on and grind through a little snow.” The longest-tenured Blackhawk and the team’s alternate captain, Murphy, 30, is grinding through his seventh Chicago winter. The Boston-born, Ohio-raised blueliner played pond hockey at his grandparents’ farm in Ontario as a kid and doesn’t mind getting out in the cold — at the very least to take his Samoyed, Finn, for walks in the park or on his Lincoln Park rooftop (“he literally eats the snow”). Murphy is just happy to have proper winters after spending his first four seasons in Phoenix. “In Arizona, it’s almost like you’re on vacation year-round. They tried to get the holidays involved by putting Christmas lights on palm trees. It didn’t feel right.”
