You can smell the savory scent lingering in the air from at least three blocks away. Starting from 75th and Prairie and moving down the block, billows of fragrant smoke waft from Lem’s Bar-B-Q’s metal smokestack and hang appealingly over much of Chatham. As one of the originators of the iconic South Side barbecue aquarium smoker and hickory-smoked rib tips, Lem’s helps define Chicago’s meaty culinary heritage. For me, gobbling up tender ribs, tips, and links covered in Lem’s tangy vinegar-based sauce and a sopping piece of Wonder bread is the ultimate South Side experience. The scent is just the first part of it. 311 E. 75th St., Chatham
