A very meaty week of openings: For one, there’s now a second location of Avondale BBQ spot Pork Shoppe (5721 N. Clark St., Andersonville, 773-654-1800) with pork belly pastrami, Nashville hot chicken, and seating aplenty, with a patio and brunch to follow soon.

And for more protein, the latest steak house option is Prime & Provisions (222 N. LaSalle St., Loop). Chef Anthony Fraske (Shaw’s, Weber Grill) says he’ll be doing twists on the standard steaks, switching up how things are cut and using pesticide- and hormone-free meats.


If you’re planning on visiting Ay Chiwowa (311 W. Chicago Ave., River North) anytime soon, you may want to change your plans—as of now, the place is closed to the public so it can be reconcepted with the help of Rockit Ranch chef/partner Kevin Hickey. You can still reserve the space for private events for the time being. Watch this site for details on the new iteration.

Sad news from the Winchester (1001 N. Winchester Ave., Ukrainian Village). The better-than-your-average neighborhood café is closed indefinitely after an electrical fire damaged the space Sunday morning. Repairs are underway, nobody was hurt, and they’re hoping to reopen soon.

For its June issue, Cooking Light named the best farmers market in each state, and representing Illinois is the Logan Square Farmers Market (which starts just east of the intersection of Logan Boulevard and Milwaukee Avenue). The market’s off this weekend but starts its outdoor season in earnest on May 17.
