Heartland Alliance Celebration of Home & Garden Preview Party

May 1, 2010 – The Heartland Alliance held a Preview Party at the home of Jill and Dick Gammonley to announce the features for the 2010 Celebration of Home & Garden tour to be held on June 12th in Harbor Country, Michigan. The event was sponsored by Rika Yoshida and Joe Mansueto, the Sara Lee Foundation, and Chicago Home + Garden.

The 17th Annual Celebration of Home & Garden benefits the work of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, an organization that helps people who are threatened by poverty or danger to improve their lives and realize their human rights. Heartland Alliance provides housing, health care, economic security, and legal protection services to more than 200,000 people annually. For more than 120 years, Heartland Alliance has been providing award-winning solutions to society’s most difficult problems, and is a leader in developing affordable and supportive housing. Proceeds from the tour will help develop housing and expand services for people living in poverty in southwestern Michigan and Chicago.

Festa Ravinia 2010

April 25, 2010 – The Ravinia Associates raised a record of over $220,000 at its annual fundraiser “Festa” on Saturday, April 25. This black-tie event benefits the not-for-profit Ravinia Festival and its REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs, which provide students throughout the Chicago region with free music education. This year the event also honored Ravinia Trustee and Ravinia Women’s Board member Lucy Minor, who has helped expand the scope and depth of the festival’s education programs. Held at the Ravenswood Billboard Factory, the benefit featured the theme “Shaken Not Stirred.” Festa 2010 was co-chaired by John Martin and Steve Rappin. The Ravinia Associates president is Kathryn Ingraham. The event attracted more than 350 guests.

6th Annual DreamHome Preview Party

April 15, 2010–The Merchandise Mart unveiled the 6th annual DreamHome at an exclusive preview gala Thursday, April 15th, which benefited the UCCRF Women’s Board, which raises funds to support basic cancer biology research at the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center. Gala attendees were the first to see this year’s DreamHome. Nine designers contributed to the “Cool Elegance” home that blended luxury furnishings from The Design Center showrooms with modern, clean lines.

2010 Green Awards Reception at Shedd Aquarium

April 13, 2010–For the fourth consecutive year, Chicago magazine honored five local eco-innovators in its annual Green Awards editorial feature. To salute these individuals, Chicago magazine partnered with Shedd Aquarium to hold a reception in Shedd’s newly renovated Oceanarium. Guests enjoyed a brief awards presentation, which included a documentary by Suree Towfighnia, followed by a private viewing of the aquarium’s beluga whale calf.

Chicago magazine Goes Green on Earth Day

April 22, 2010—In celebration of both Chicago magazine’s and Earth Day’s 40th anniversaries this year, Chicago announced the launch of digital versions of Chicago magazine, Chicago Home + Garden, and Chicago FASHION through Zinio, an interactive publishing company. Chicago magazine partnered with Recycle Tech Solutions to co-host an electronic donation site at the Tribune Tower on Earth Day, April 22, 2010. Recycle Tech Solutions’ “DreamGreen” program seeks to inform and educate working professionals on the harmful effects of e-waste (electronic devices) on our environment. Through this program, Recycle Tech Solutions diverts millions of pounds of environmentally harmful electronics away from landfills. Operating in Chicago for the last 20 years, Recycle Tech Solutions looks forward to being on the forefront of environmental awareness in the workplace.

CZS Annual Conservation Award Dinner

March 2, 2010– The Chicago Zoological Society (CZS), which manages Brookfield Zoo, hosted its annual Conservation Dinner on March 2, 2010, at The Art Institute of Chicago. The 2010 George B. Rabb Conservation Medal was awarded to Polar Bears International and its CEO and president, Robert Buchanan, for their conservation efforts in protecting polar bears and arctic habitats. The dinner was presented by the CZS Women’s Board and sponsored by Freeborn & Peters, LLP. The award was created in 2005 by the Board of Trustees of the Chicago Zoological Society to honor the lifelong legacy of animal welfare and the worldwide conservation leadership of George Rabb, Ph.D., president emeritus of the Society. March 16, 2010 — Chicago magazine, the Palmer House, and Cindy Burns hosted a party for 150 guests to celebrate Candace Jordan’s “Belle of the Blog” story in the March issue of Chicago magazine. Guests toasted Candace while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in Lockwood Restaurant and Bar at the Palmer House Hilton.

Common Threads World Festival

March 1, 2010 — Some of Chicago’s and the world’s most notable chefs brought their culinary expertise together for Common Threads’ Fifth Annual World Festival on March 1st at Soldier Field. Ingrid Hoffmann, Stephanie Izard, Nigella Lawson, and Ming Tsai were among this year’s celebrity chefs who served up global gourmet cuisine to over 900 attendees. The event netted $937,762 in support of the organization’s after-school culinary programs.
