Ariel Sinha’s Portraits

“I think anyone would want their memory to be marked not by the violence of their death but by the beauty of their lives,” says Sinha, an Albany Park–based artist, describing what motivated her to create intimate portraits of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other Black people whose deaths helped launch a nationwide reckoning over police brutality and systemic racism. Since she began sharing her images on Instagram, tens of thousands of people have circulated them, both on and off social media. Provided that the pictures are not being sold or merchandised, Sinha encourages people to keep doing it — widely and repeatedly.
