Best Mass-Culture Comeback
How do you keep the blockbuster season alive when no one’s going to theaters? This summer a few entrepreneurs and city officials tackled the problem by tapping into nostalgia. ChiTown Futbol, an indoor soccer center in Pilsen, converted its parking lot (above) into a drive-in venue where moviegoers could get food delivered to their cars while watching crowd pleasers like Grease and Coco in 4K HD. The Davis Theater assembled pop-up screens in Lincoln Yards. And the City of Chicago put on eight screenings in various neighborhoods. Here’s to hoping that even when multiplexes open back up, getting in the car for big-screen entertainment under the stars endures as a summer standby.
