Best Bloom in a Former Food Desert
The Feeding South Shore Stimulus Program
Amena Karim, a communications professional and community activist who lives in South Shore, saw a looming disaster for poor, elderly, and health-compromised neighbors who wouldn’t be able to safely leave their homes to get food during the shutdown. So she teamed up with Local Market Foods — the area’s only full-service grocery store since a Dominick’s closed six years ago — and lined up corporate sponsors like Verizon to create Feeding South Shore. Over a period of four weeks, the program delivered free groceries to a thousand local households. It wrapped up on June 2, but thanks to the momentum generated by the initiative, Local Market Foods announced that it was partnering with Instacart, marking the launch of the neighborhood’s first-ever online grocery delivery service.
