Jake’s Pub is proof that there is such a thing as a good bar on North Clark Street. By “good bar,” I mean one for people who don’t want to hit each other or throw up on the street. Jake’s has a divine selection of seasonal beers, a pool table, plenty of seats, a digital jukebox, and a clientele that doesn’t seem to mind when your friends play Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” three times in a row on your birthday. (In retrospect, I’m actually very sorry.) Jake’s is a classic. It opened in 1933 as a penny candy store, then transformed into a liquor store once Prohibition was lifted, and it became a bar not long after that. Jake’s is cash only and always will be. And if none of this has sold you, allow me to give you one more detail: Jake’s has popcorn.
