Lettuce Entertain You’s sky-high steakhouse, created in concert with Los Angeles pasta maestro Evan Funke, is a big production number and oftentimes an excellent restaurant. The elevator ride up is a thrill, and the room, with its soaring views of the river and lake, is beautiful beyond expectations. The schiacciata — puffy, pull-apart bread served on a pedestal — is a must, as are the fried zucchini blossoms, which, despite being a bit overbattered, are irresistible with their gush of ricotta and dusting of ground fennel seed. Both the wine and cocktail offerings are top drawer, and the beverage assistance is thoughtful. Tre Dita, though, can also be an impersonal restaurant, particularly if you’re seated in the dark backroom or receive robotic service that’s a beat too slow. Yet the breadcrumb-flecked chicory salad in a lilting anchovy vinaigrette, the flavor of tagliatelle in a true Tuscan ragu, or a meltingly tender New York strip will win back your heart — and remind you to ask for a better table next time.
